I looked at some other thread that suggested that I download the update
without using windows update. I did that. I got more information about where
it was hung.
It was hung checking for enough space. I have enough disk space.
I looked at my environmental variables to see where my temp directory was.
I looked there. and proceeded to delete all files and directories there.
I answered no to system files and direcories being deleted.
A couple of files would not be deleted because they were being used.
They started with Acr so I thought that they were part of adobe reader.
I checked and noticed that it was running. I killed it from the task manager
(there was no window to control it) I also killed iexplorer, (also no window
to control).
I deleted the files. Since the task that was using it was gone, it allowed
me to.
I stopped and restarted the update. It worked without a problem.
My guess is that internet explorer or adobe acrobat running at the same time
as the patch was the problem. I can't tell which one since I killed both of
them.
If internet explorer was the problem then using windows update would always
fail since it is invoked using internet explorer.
