DirectX 9 for Windows 2000 (KB904706) may fail to run

My company have 2 computers which are of Windows 2000 Professional with SP4
and all of the updates (both critical and non-critical), except the following
one, installed.

The DirectX 9 for Windows 2000 (KB904706) security update seems to have
problem in these computers. When running the update from the Automatic
Update, it will wait for several hours, and eventually tell that the
installation is failed. The error code is 0x80242007. I have searched the
Microsoft website, but the code is not found.

The same problem occurs when installing the update by the downloaded exe
file. The process will wait for the second screen displayed (something like
"executing pre-installation process"), and I can only click "cancel" to stop
the update program.

I found that some other computers can successfully install this update
(including Windows 2000 Server and Professional, with SP4 and all the
critical and non-critical updates installed). All of these computers
(including the 2 which have this problem) have almost the same configuration
(e.g. Symantec Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere, and MS SQL Server 2000). At this time,
I don't know the cause of the problem

Please help me solve the problem. Thank you.

I don't know the cause and I have XP home only-however I also have the
Symantic anti-Virus. I have noticed for example that the anti-virus program
will
give an alert saying some of the HP help sites are of a "HIGH RISK". Maybe
we
all need some help from Symantic (Norton)

Try a web search?

http://docxp.mvps.org/WU5-ERR.htm

(MSN search for
0x80242007
)

So, the implication is that there may be a problem with your installer.
What version do you have? E.g. what do you see in the top line
when you Run... (press Win-R and enter msiexec /?

Have you looked at your log for other clues?
E.g. the error code being reported to you may not be
the most significant one for your incident.

I believe I may be encountering the same problem on one of two Win2K
professional machines. Windoes automatic update is used, and the DirectX
patch (KB904706) is selected. I get the blue thermometer, which hangs for
minimum 20 minutes at the haflway point. Then I give up and use task manager
to kill IE and the associated update process. Dxdiag suggests that the
quartz.dll has not been updated to the right level. My DirectX is at 9.0c
and I'm on Win2k pro SP4. I've tried this several times over a period of
several days, always with the same results.

Note that both machines have Symantec Antivirus.

There appears to be a problem with the Synpatics touchpad driver on many
laptops. My install hangs with high CPU use ~70% by the SynTPenh.exe
driver. Others have noted the same behavior. Here's how I got the update
to work.

Download the update directly from the microsoft site here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms05-050.mspx

I ran the update, had it stall as usual, then went to task manager, verifed
that the above mentioned driver was using up lots of CPU time, then ended
the process. The update then continued to proceed on its own without a
hitch.

A followup check of windows update verifies that the install went correctly
and requires no more updates.

My Windows Installer is V 3.01.4000.1823.

The MSN Web search returns no result for 0x80242007, if I use the Traditional
Chinese version of MSN search. This may be the cause of the search problem,
because my Windows is Traditional Chinese.

Also, I found another website that tells what this code means:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/wuc.htm

However, this website cannot be searched in any of the search engine (MSN,
Yahoo, Google).

This suggests that the version of quartz.dll will be a clue.
Do a search of your harddrive for that quartz.dll module and report
what versions of it you find and where they are (pathnames).

Hmm... have you seen this?

<title>The computer may not be updated after you install the
&quot;Security Update for DirectX 7.0 for Windows 2000 (KB904706)&quot;
on a Windows 2000-based computer that is running DirectX 8 or DirectX 9</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909596

(MSN search for
kb904706 site:microsoft.com language:en
)

I was just trying to find version information for you to check
but this is much more specific I think than what I was trying to find.

Hi

I get the same error code (Error Code: 0x80242007) and also have not been
able to find anything on how to fix it either on the internet or on MS
website.

I have the same version of Installer as Default too, and think this may be
the problem. I've had problems installing other updates too - particularly
the Toshiba updates for my laptop, and have had big problems trying to
UNinstall an HP printer.

I'm not sure how to get a log of the update, but would greatly appreciate
any suggestions.
Thanks
