Disable Antivirus before manual update?I

I've noticed that occasionally one (or sometimes two) of my updates don't
install properly, but they do if I temporarily disable my antivirus. Is this
normal? I update manually from the website.

It's at least advisable, especially in Win9x.

To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your
anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes
closed before beginning the install.
