Running W98SE. Performed maintenance associated with installing high speed
connection, firewall etc. Installed critical updates and somewhere along the
way I said yes to a prompt for automatic Windows updates. It's asking too
often, slowing my system. I'd rather do it manually when I am ready to check
(maybe once a month or so). Any ideas how to disable the feature? Nead it
step by step. Thank you!!

2nd question, running Media Player 9 and now that I am connected all the
time, the connection slows my playing of video clips which I do often. The
player is balky, slowing everything up. Ideas on how to disable this
automatic connection and still leave the ethernet on? Thanks very much.

Mrow,

First question -
From : Description of the Windows Critical Update Notification Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224420

" You can remove Windows Critical Update Notification by using
Add/Remove Programs:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification.
4. Click Add/Remove. "

Second question -
Windows Media Player Newsgroup

Windows XP is much better and securer on a broadband connection. You can
get a dell for $300-$500. Dimension 8400 is the best one.
