Since a few weeks I recognize more and more web pages who lauch a full new IntExp 8 window
and put their advertising stuff inside.

I am only performing tab browsing with ONE IE 8 browser window under WinXP.
So these new windows are really annoying.

How can I completely turn off this new browser window opening but allow
new tabs and allow Javascripts in general?

Brian

In TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>GENERAL, Tabbed Browsing, you can control the
behavior when a pop-up is encounterd and how IE should deal with the links
you want to follow. For Pop-ups you get to select from Let IE decide, Always
open in a new window, or Always open in a new tab. And for links you can
choose among New Window, new tab in current window, or in the current tab or
window.

The web writer that designed the page gets to decide if your clicks will
invoke the selection you have made, and occasionally he will be smart enough
to write code that ignores the selection you made and he will invoke the
experience he wants you to have.

Consider that you are asking how to set your machine to ignore source code
on a conditional basis. The condition is that there are some instances of
the behavior that are not annoying and you don't even notice what is
happening, and other instances that bother you enough to write the question.
The problem for the answer to your question is that your browser will do the
same thing all of the time, ignore source code. The code is placed in the
pages you visit by the developer that wrote that page, your browser cannot
selectively ignore code, and some code is wirtten to tell all browsers to
NOT ignore code sections that you want to ignore through the selections you
made from Internet Options,, Tabbed Browsing.

I agree that a developer that writes code to get around yout selections is
rude, but the only way to avoid the developer is to avoid the sites he has
built.

You get a few more selections in TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>ADVANCED that apply
to allowing Pop-ups, but developers can write code to get around the
selections you make here also.

Hi Brian,

You can open change how IE8 opens pop-ups (either by a new window or a new tab) by following these steps here:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab, and then, in the Tabs section, click Settings.
4. Make a selection in the When a pop-up is encountered section.
5. Click OK twice.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Cassandra
