Hi!

We're using WSUS 3.1.

We set the option 4 in "Configure Automatic Updates" in the WSUS policy in
the workstations and set the time for instaal at 10am.

We'd like that the updates could be download and installed without user
interaction.

So, when users shuts down the workstations at the end of the day, the option
"install updates and shut down" will be the default, they will install the
updates using this option and then the workstation will be turned off.

But what's happening is that updates had been installed and a window is
poped up asking user to reboot.

Follow, are the options I set in workstations policy, from top to down:

This *is* the default behavior of WSUS and the Windows Update Agent.

This is also the default behavior of WSUS and the Windows Update Agent.

Yes.. because you *scheduled* updates to be installed at 10 AM -- !!

Change this to schedule updates to be installed at =8PM=, and then the only
machines that will be impacted by the automatic installation are those that
were not shutdown at the end of the workday. Updates will install and the
machine(s) will be rebooted.

Those that were shutdown, but did not use the "Install Updates and Shutdown"
option, will be installed at power-on the next morning. (This, also, is the
default behavior of WSUS/WUA.)

Thankyou Lawrence!

Okay... let me check if I understood.

That time i set, 10am, is not the time for download, it's time for
installations.
If I set 8pm, it will download during the day and ask to install on shut
down, won't it?

Thankyou!

FM

Correct.

Maybe.

The question of whether it downloads and is available for installation at
the end of the day has several variables to consider.

1. What time you approved the update.
2. What time the update finished downloading to the WSUS Server.
3. What time (if) the client executed its next detection after the download
to the WSUS Server completed.
4. What time (if) the client completed the download of the update from the
WSUS Server.

If #4 actually completes before the user shuts the machine down at the end
of the day, then the "Install Updates and Shutdown" option will be
presented.

If the update is still being downloaded, or the detection has not been
performed since the update was downloaded to the WSUS Server, then the
client machine will not be able to install the update at shutdown and
detection/download will resume when the PC is powered back on.

I think it's clearer now.

Thankyou very much.
