If you disable recursion under the Advanced tab, DNS will not resolve any names other than the zones installed. This is used by ISPs that host hundreds of zones for public records and when they do not want anyone on the internet to use their server as a forwarder or as a DNS server to resolve names. It only resolves names of the zones it is hosting.
If you disable recursion under the Forwarders tab, you are telling it to use only the Forwarder, and not use the Root hints, but it will resolve any names, including what it hosts or internet names.
If you are an ISP and hosting public records that you do not want anyone on the internet to use your server as a resolver, then disable recursion under the advanced tab.
If this is for an AD environment, I would suggest leaving the options default, so if the Forwarder doesn't work, it will still use the Root hints. I assume also, that if this is for an AD environment, that all of your machines are ONLY using your internal DNS in their IP properties. If not, AD will have numerous issues.
