I seem to remember that when I downloaded the new version of Messenger that
it included a home page and search protector. At that time I accidentally set
it to maintain Live Search as the default search in IE7. I have just
downloaded IE8 and now every time it starts it tells me that it stopped a
program from changing the search provider. The only search engine is Live
Search. It is the default and it will not allow me to change it. Apparently
IE8 does not recognize the Windows Live search protector? How do I turn this
Live search protector off?

Greetings,

Well there is a component called Choice Guard in Messenger, and you can uninstall this
component by pressing the Windows key and R to open the Run box, , then pasting the following
in and pressing OK:
msiexec /x {8FFC5648-FAF8-43A3-BC8F-42BA1E275C4E}

However, I don't really believe this is what's causing this. There is no harm in removing it
though.

You're right, it didn't help. Whatever is causing the problem is protecting
Live Search as the default which made me think of the Choice Guard. I cannot
change it from Live Search or remove it because those choices are grayed out.
If I add another search provider I can switch to it but making it the default
has no effect. When i restart IE8 it gives the message again, brings up the
Search preferences and Live Search is still the default.

Hi,

If it were me, I'd just run Process Monitor to find out what process is changing the value.
However, the IE MVPs may have an easier way and/or know more specifically what's going on, so
my real suggestion would just be to head over to the IE groups and post there with this.

I can tell you that I recently was away for a weekend and decided to give dialup on Netzero a
try [again]. It installed a nice little library which constantly resets the IE search
settings as well. Although I was able to get [lousy] dial-up service for free where I was,
so it was worth it
