Hi Everyone,

I've had 3 unsuccessfully installation attempts of the SP3 update . All
attempts to update received the "Access is denied " error .After the 1st
failure, I went to .... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377/ , and tried
updating with my Bit Defender 2008 anti virus disabled, and after that I
tried updating with a burned_ to_ CD ISO image of the update. No luck .
All 3 update attempts left my computer very fragmented , and it changed the
colors of some letters in file names, to the same colors of file name letters
in my Windows folder.
Before I "Reset the registry and the file permissions " , and try another
update attempt , I would like to ask 2-questions:
1. Would uninstalling my anti virus, rather than disabling it make any
difference ?

2.Could a repair install , I did over one year ago, cause any problems with
a service pack update ? ( other updates installed successfully )

Thanks for your time !

You mention you disabled BitDefender. Are you 100% certain that it was
*completely* disabled prior to the last installation attempt ? That
includes *all* running Services of it. Consult the included Help file or
visit BitDefender's web site to learn how this is accomplished.

Suggest you ensure that BD is completely disabled, disconnect the system
from any network or internet connection, and then attempt to run the
System File Checker. Read this prior to disconnecting:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

*REMEMBER* to reenable BD prior to reconnecting the system.

If running SFC did not resolve the issues you describe, then uninstall
BitDefender first, and then do a Repair Installation:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

IF the system is at Service Pack 2 or even SP1 after the Repair Install,
then there should be no issue installing SP3.

A1. Probably not.

A2. Doubtful.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 covers a lot more than just disabling
your anti-virus application.

Hi Everyone,
I'm happy to report that yesterday I successfully installed the SP3
update . And the previous failures had nothing to do with my BitDefender anti
virus . I went to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377/
, and used method #3 "Reset the registry and the file permissions" to enable
my computer to install SP3 .
And the SP3 update has fixed a problem I've had with Outlook Express 6
opening very slowly.

Thanks for your replies !
