how to disable window vista auto run programs

Hi,
I tried to disable auto run programs form Vista. I highlighted the program
but the 'disable' button does not active, and next to the program it says 'in
progress', what is that mean? Please help my computer is running turtle slow.
this is a faiarly new machine. 8 months old.
