Disable Windows Live Messenger

I have Windows Vista 64bit and would like to know how to disable the Windows
Live Messenger from opening everytime my computer boots up. I don't want it
running in the background either.

Type -msconfig- into your search bar. Click the "Startup" tab, an
uncheck Windows Live Messenger

From the Messenger menu go to Tools / Options / Sign In and make sure
"Automatically Run Windows Live Messenger when I log on Windows" is
unchecked. It should not show up in your system tray at all until you launch
from the icon.

Hi,

You can't use msconfig to turn off Messenger in this way I'm afraid.

I was made aware that there are a number of the Live online services such as
Hotmail, Spaces, Profile, etc. that will indeed cause the icon to appear in
the system tray even when Windows Live Messenger is not set to start with
Windows. The icon will show with the red X on it to show that Messenger is
not running, but the icon will be there.

Sorry for any confusion. Since I don't use Hotmail and rarely access Spaces
or my Profile I wasn't actually aware they would cause the icon to appear
anyway.
