I have the same problem (on a Dell Inspirion 600m laptop, XP Professional).
I tried many options: updated relevant drivers, updated using the LAN rather
than wireless (but then the LAN could not be disabled), etc. Then I used
restore to back out of all recent updates and loaded each one at a time. On
my computer it is KB905474 Windows Genuine Advantage Notification that causes
the problem (and I DEFINITELY have a valid Windows install). Therefore one
solution: don't install KB905474.
