Disabling restore points with WU

For some reason my copy of XP pro with SP2 doesn't want to install updates.
When using the WU interface it just freezes with no information, but with the
manual update I see it freezes at "Creating Restore Point"

How do I stop updates from trying to create a restore point? Disabling it
from the system menu and the service doesn't stop XP from trying. My copy of
XP is freshly installed and it is very annoying that I cannot install the
security updates at all.

Is there a way of stopping the creation of restore points using the command
line or an option in WU?

The purpose of the creation of a restore point is so that you have it to
fall back on just in case there is an adverse effect on the system due
to the update. Enable system restore and set it to it's smallest size.
Do the update.
Wait a week or two. If there are no adverse effects, go back in and
disable system restore.
In these days of courts and lawyers, do you think MS would leave Users
without a way to back out of updates gracefully ?

I have a strange install, I bought a copy of XP pro and am trying out in
tandem to 98. I used partition magic to reduce the size of my old partition
and installed a clean copy of XP. It installed fine, but On E:\ !

When I try to update, it immediately tries to backup C:'s win98 windows
folder and proceeds to freeze. I know it is trying to use C:'s because I
cannot rename 98's folder as it has been locked.

So there is no way of avoiding this?
