Could someone tell me how to get rid of the "Star" Push pin in the
systray for SP2? I have the Windows XP SP2 CD, and would install
using it rather than Auto Update or downloading from Windows Update.

Since I have 3 months left until SP1 support ends, I still have time
to update our computer's BIOS/Hardware drivers etc. As per Robin
Walker listed instructions below***...

and I'd really like to do it in my OWN TIME, without the intimidation
from MS.

MS will probably extend the support date beyond Oct 10 anyway....

E.W.

***
1. Ensure that you carried out all pre-requisite work before applying
SP2.
This includes
- updating the system BIOS to the latest version;
- updating the drivers for the motherboard chipset, video, and audio.

2. Ensure that the system is completely free of all viruses, trojans,
spyware, adware, etc.

3. Esnure that you have lots of free disk space.

4. Download and "Save" (not "Run") the complete SP2 updater from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

5. Disconnect your PC from the internet.

6. Disable or uninstall all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware,
download
accelerators, firewalls, etc applications.

7. Now run the updater you downloaded in step 4.

Can you bring yourself to just ignore it for a while? It seems the easiest
thing to do.

Hi Robin,
If I just ignore it, of which I and my Husband have for a week or so,
will it eventually go away?

Will it mess up my Upgrade install of SP2 from the CD?

There used to be a file you deleted or renamed to get the Windows Auto
Update to redownload messed up updates. Can you point me to the
Knowledge Base article that has that information?

I turned off Windows Auto Update and the services that go with it,
because I don't trust MS anymore..... I had SP2 Upgrade set as not to
down load on the Windows Update site settings ... they over road my
settings when the WGA verification/notification programs were
distributed. They say I can change the settings, but no, I can't,
even though there's a "Change Notifications Settings" item in the Icon
Menu.
There's an error on the first page of which is over ridden so fast by
the next page loading, then the page opens to tick the Disable
Critical Updates box, but that hasn't affected my machine and the
"Star" push pin in my tray. (It doesn't get rid of the icon).

My Husband and I share a DSL connection...... I'm afraid he'll click
that update/install , he'll mess up his internet connection, I'll
spend unproductive time deleting/reinstalling.......he's known to get
impatient............ignoring it is NOT the easiest thing to do for
him!

I click on "Obtain XP Service Pack 2" on the icon menu and the page
says..
Your computer has already been upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2
(SP2). For tips or help using it, see the SP2 support and how-tos.

Well, that's interesting. Maybe I should delete my cookies and try
again!!! LOL
Incredible,
E.W.

Presumably it will go away when you install XP SP2.

I cannot think why it should.

Your system might be in intermediate state after a failed SP2 installation?

What does control panel "System" say in relation to Service Packs?

If it were just me, I can just ignore it. It's the other impatient
person and his computer sharing a highspeed internet connection with
that I'm worried about! lol .............................E.W.

I have 3 Updates for Windows XP,
Windows Genuiun Advantage Validation Tool
Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
54 Windows XP Hotfixes
3 Windows XP Hotfixes (SP1) (My Windows XP Home version already had
SP1 installed)
and 19 Windows XP (SP2) hotfixes.

This is what I get when I click on the Windows Genuine Advantage
Notifications "more information" link in Add/Remove Programs;
How to uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications
Article ID : 905474
Last Review : June 2, 2006
Revision : 3.1

You can use Add or Remove Programs to view Windows Genuine Advantage
Notifications, but you cannot use Add or Remove Programs to remove the
notifications.

You can temporarily disable Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications.
To do this, right-click the Notifier icon in the notification area and
select Change Notifications Settings. Then, follow the prompts. This
will disable the Notification Prompts until a new release of the
Notification Update is released.

When I click "Change Notification Settings" on the icon menu, there
are no prompts to follow on the web page that opens. There's a tick
box to "Disable Critical Updates", but nothing more.

The whole WGA stuff is buggy.
