I cannot download anything from the internet. I have tried all th
suggestions I have found and still no luck. I have made sure that fil
download is on, I have tried unsuccessfully to system restore, I hav
turned off Windows fire wall and defender, I changed the user setting,
tried to uninstall windows defender, but Vista won't let me.I reset th
internet settings. I am at my wit's end. This started happening righ
after I downloaded Norton. From what I can see from the different forum
I've been to, no one seems sure if it is a Vista problem or a Norto
problem. The only good thing so far is that my computer is a lot faste
now that Windows defender and fire wall is off. I can't even downloa
Windows7 What can I do to fix this!

Hi, rfpatzman.

In my experience, every time I've downloaded something from the Internet,
Windows has put the downloaded file where I told it to put it. Sometimes,
my instruction has been given so automatically that I never even noticed.
But when that little box comes up that asks if I want to Run or Save, I
click Save. The next box offers to put the file to the same location where
it put the last one that it downloaded - but it also allows me to Browse to
a different location. Years ago I created a new Download folder (on my
Drive E.
Almost all my downloads go to that folder, from which I can move the file if
I want it somewhere else.

One way to find where your last download went is to start to download the
same file again. This time, watch carefully - DON'T just click, click,
click without reading the screens. Watch carefully to see where Vista
proposes to put this new download. Chances are, THAT's where it put your
previous download of the same file. Look there. If the previous file is
not there, then let Vista download it into that location - or choose another
folder - and write it down this time.

IF that doesn't work, post back. There is at least one "brute force" way
guaranteed to find your missing file - if you know at least part of the
filename - by using the ancient "Dir" command from a Command Prompt window.

First thing is to get rid of Norton. Use the tool from Symantec as per the link
below. Then install something like Avast,AVG , Avira. Then go to
Properties\Security\Custom Level and scroll down to Downloads and make sure Enabled
is selected and then close out selecting Apply

Ever use common sense? You say this started happening after you downloaded
Norton. I suppose you installed it. Now you can't download. What could
possibly be the cause?

First, if you insist in top posting, don't use a sig delimiter.

You say go to Properties\etc - how many places can you go to
Properties? Hundreds of thousands?

Of course, you meant Internet Explorer\Tools\Internet
Options\Security\Custom level... or Control Panel\Internet Options\
Security\Custom level... or maybe some other way to get there - but
Properties anywhere in the go-to string ain't getting, at least, me
there.

Then you say close out selecting Apply - but there is no Apply on that
window and to top it off, Apply doesn't close anything - which is
exactly the reason for Apply.

If you are one of those whackos who purposely give wrong answers, you
did fairly well.

If you are trolling, you got me.

If you are serious, perhaps considering some other hobby is in order.

Don't go getting all irritated... remember, you are the one who
posted the goofy, time-wasting reply. You know, the one that will be
in Google forever.

You could start by describing what actually happens when you try.

Get rid of Norton. I have had this issue, on a failed install of Norton. Use
the removal tools from Symantec and all will be well again.

My two cents...

My experiences with Norton were often bad in past years, but with reviews
lately giving very high grades to Norton Internet Security 2009, I
(bravely? foolishly?) tried it.

No problems, no grief, no trouble downloading other files...

My judgment about reviews: read the reviews in the magazines, in on-line
sites (CNet, Amazon, whatever), & in Usenet. Study them carefully. Then
roll some dice. It's still a crap shoot.

But to repeat: my experience with NIS 2009 has been fine.

Mystery...
