Disappearing files after Feb '07 Updates

I installed the February updates yesterday morning for Windows XP Home
Edition and Office 2000 and after rebooting all of the files on my desktop
were missing as well as the shortcuts to My Documents and the like. However,
the My Computer icon was there as were the folders on my desktop and the
documents within the folders (as best as I can determine). I tried rebooting
in safe mode and looking directly in the directory
c:\docume~1\username\desktop (or whatever the right path is to the desktop)
and all I saw was what showed up on the desktop.

For some reason system restore is not letting me go back to to a prior
state, but I tried manually uninstalling the February updates for Windows XP
(the ones for Office 2000 said they could not be uninstalled), but that did
not help.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm at a loss as to how to get the files
back or why they disappeared in the first place. I would greatly appreciate
any help. Thanks,

I'm having a similar problem, but in my case, I can't get to Control Panel or
my printer or scanner. I can't use my documents either.

What happend to your Systemrestore?
Is there no Restore Point? Or is there no way to open the wizard for
creating/restoring your System?

I Installed the updates at 3 machines.
1 of them had problems:
1) i could not start the systemrestore any more, the links and buttons seem
to be dead. I found an old KB Article (for XP sp1a) that describes how to
reinstall the systemrestore via Safe Mode and by rightclick
\windows\inf\sr.inf and select install.
==> for me, that worked, my system restore works fine now.

2)
i had another problem with the startmenu and windows shell update, i will
post that in a new thread.

I had the same problem. Nothing in my opening screen was the same & I
couldn't navigate the way I always had. I removed the updates immediately.
Now, everytime I sign back on, I get the "Update Reminder" show up. It's
really frustrating, especially since I'm not very computer savvy.
