The disappearing media player

Something curious is happening. For some reason, after the latest round of
updates to my Vista Premium Home Edition, when I try to play a video, I can
hear the sound but I can't see a picture. What's even more strange is I
can't find any instance of Media Player running, not even in the task
manager. Has anyone any idea as to what's happening and how I can fix
this???
