Disappearing mouse pointer

I have a Gateway Desktop model GM563E with a Vista Home Premium operating
system. After installing Vista update 938371 released 4/8/08, my mouse
pointer disappeared (while keyboard functions still worked). Changing mouse
settings and installing a new mouse did not remedy the problem. I needed to
do a system restore and remove the Vista update to make the pointer work
again. Has anyone else had this problem?

I had the same problem that the mouse pointer disappeared, keyboard worked. I
am using Vista Business 64bit. I tried a PS/2 mouse, and this worked. When I
connected my USB mouse to a different USB port I could log in to Windows (I
use a password), then Windows started to recognize the mouse on the new USB
port, installed a driver, and then the mouse dissapeared, so it is definitely
some kind of driver issue. My solution is the same as yours, I did a system
restore and disabled Windows Updates.

I installed that one and have no trouble with any of the several mice and
other HID I have working. You may also be using another HID (Human Interface
device) that is causing your conflict. Device Manager in control panel will
help you find out.

I am having a similar problem with Vista. Last time I shut my computer
down, my mouse worked fine. Now it is gone. I normally use a regular
Dell USB mouse. I tried a PS2 mouse that that isn't recognized at all
either. So, I plugged the USB mouse back in. The computer recognized
that I plugged something but claimed it couldn't find a driver for it.

As an additional note to this problem: for the past couple of days ANY
USB or firewire drive that I plug in (even ones that I have used before)
will not work. As with the mouse, the computer recognizes that I plugged
something in but it can't find a driver for it.

Anybody have a solution for this other than reinstalling Vista? Having
no mouse and no connection to a external hard drive is quite an
inconvenience. Even if I DID want to back my stuff up and reformat my
computer, I don't dare do that because I have nothing to back it up on
besides a bunch of DVD's. I tried system restore already to no avail
and don't know what else to try.

Right click on the Computer icon. Choose Properties, choose Device Manager.
Check to see if any of the USB controllers or Human Interface Devices are in
error status. Correct same. A lot easer than a reinstall.

I just started experiencing the confounding invisible mouse curso
today. It always exhibits this annoyance now every time I return fro
SLEEP mode. The only remedy I've tried that makes it visible again is t
reset the pc, (but I haven't tried every possible remedy). I notice
that many people have some sort of NVIDIA device controller in the mix
as in my PC.

One thing that sticks out that caught my attention was that the devic
manager seems to always expand the Network adapters device subcatagorie
on its own whenever I open device manager or scan for hardware changes
But the WLAN is always left disabled since I only use the ethernet port
and reports no problems.

hmmm I am using the Logitech wireless optical mouse with Vista Hom
Premium 32bit, and, apart from the fact that I dislike the "stuff pop
up when you hover over it" feature, and cannot shut that down, (which i
a Vista problem not a mouse problem).. .. I absolutely LOVE this littl
mouse and have no problems with it
