I'm still running the last version of XP, but a friend has a Vista computer
and is having a problem. He's a newbie to computers and was surfing the
internet when he got spooked by one of those popups about security issues.
When it asked to install their software he said yes, whereupon it tried to
get some money out of him. He then uninstalled the software, but was still
getting popups all the time. Obviously he's gotten a trojan. It caused his
desktop icons and taskbar to disappear, and will not even allow right clicks
on the desktop. About the only thing I could get it to do is run the task
manager.
In safe mode I ran his installed AT&T antivirus and spyware programs, but
that didn't work. So I downloaded, installed, and ran Superantispyware (a
very good program in my experience) and it managed to find and delete several
trojans, rogues, and tons of adware. Then I was able to get it to boot
normally. But the problem continues intermittently. Upon bootup, all the
desktop icons and taskbar appear for a moment, then disappear, and the
computer is all but frozen up. Will only allow the three finger salute.
I searched the internet and found people having similar problems, but not
quite the same. So I was hoping someone here might have some suggestion for
a good fix for this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
