Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista)

When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be
activated when I am logged on.

There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged
on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to
that option.

1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged
on at the time specified?

However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.

2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a
specified time?

Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.

3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was
completed?

Thanks,
Jerry

Hello Jerry,
What version of Vista do you have? Mine is Home Premium 32-bit, an
there is no such option as scheduled disk cleanup. I ran it manuall
when I needed to. As to the scheduled defragmentation please follow thi

Start menu > click Computer > highlight one of the disks(left click)
then right click, then choose Properties > top panel choose Tools
click Defrag now > after the prompt, you'll see this (please click th
screenshot link)

If you are looking at the screenshot, there is an option to modify th
schedule, when last defrag ran, and when is the next schedule run
Lastly, vista defrag runs in the background, and to most people'
dismay, it won't tell you a darn thing except what you can see from th
screenshot. A log? Forget about it. Sorry

Thanks for your return. It was nice of you to explain how to schedule and
run the events. However, I knew how to do that.
My questions were more specific as to whether these scheduled events will
run if I am logged in or out.
I use Home Premium 32 bit. You can find scheduling of Disk Cleanup at:

Hello Jerry
Thank you for the link. I'll go over it at a better time
When it comes to the defrag, my answer is : you have to log in befor
defrag will run. I never turn my laptop on at 1 A.M. just for dis
defrag. As you can see from my screenshot, last run was on 5/21/08 6:3
am. I get up at 6 each day, coffee, turn computer on and check on new
etc. That was why defrag ran at 6:31 am, not 1 am. Now, I have learne
that Windows Defender can be temporarily "waken" to do scanning eve
when the computer is not ON, and this is done by changing setting vi
Task Scheduler. Maybe we can do the same thing for disk defrag. Unti
someone comes along and show us the way, I'll stick to my "no" answer.
know, that means zero to what you want to know

Hello Jerry,
I have found a way to "wake" the computer and do a defrag even if the
computer is not turned on at the time. Here is how :-
Open the Task Scheduler > click Task Scheduler Libruary, then click the
pointer in front of it > click the pointer in front of Microsoft > click
the pointer in front of Windows > click Defrag > middle column, Double
Click Scheduled D.. > click Conditions > click the box in front of "wake
the computer to run this task" > Apply/OK. (Please click screenshot
link. )

Hello t-4-2

Thanks for your return. By fooling around with your link, I was able to
solve my problem for Disk Cleanup. Your link for Screenshot is quite clever.
I should probably learn that.

Since we are talking about maintenance items, I would like to pass along one
of my experiences. I tried to activate Check Disk (Chkdsk) on two occasions
and after it completed the process I had two problems. In one case, my mouse
froze on me and in the second case I lost contact with the Internet. I was
wondering if you have tried Check Disk and was it trouble free?

Nice to know you have your answers. I can't take credit. Learned th
basic method over the issue of Windows Defender
Just curious, it is really necessary to schedule disk cleanup

Hello Jerry
I didn't notice this post until now. Wonder why. I'm supposed t
receive notification each time I have reply. This one didn't show up
Anyway, Yes I had done a few chkdsk and never had a problem, althoug
there were a few problems it couldn't fix. Speaking of which, did yo
run chkdsk read-only, or did you run ** chkdsk /f, or even chkdsk /f /
**

First, your Chkdsk query. The story goes like this. On my first Chkdsk try
I used the menu supplied by Windows. It does not have the switch options you
noted. In that menu, you have two choices. The first choice is to fix system
errors. The second choice is to do the first choice plus scan and recover
bad sectors. The first time I chose only the first choice and my mouse
froze. I contacted Dell to fix my mouse problem. After the mouse problem
was fixed, they asked me to try Chkdsk “outside of Windows.” To do that,
they had me power down and up using the F8 key and pointed me toward a Repair
menu that had a command prompt option. In the option I typed Chkdsk C:,
again without any switch notations. The Chkdsk worked fine and I had no
problems afterwards.

So, I tried to do it again, this time using Windows (as I did before).
Except this time I chose both choices. I will say choosing both choices,
Chkdsk took a lot longer to complete. When it was finished, is was then when
I lost my Internet connection.

Now to put this in some perspective, I will say that on previous occasions I
have lost the Internet under other circumstances. So, maybe the Chkdsk was
just a coincidence. I have contacted Dell about my Internet problem, and one
tech told me they have had many calls on this issue. So, I think I need to
try Chkdsk again and see if problems continue.

Now, your query about the necessity to schedule disk cleanup. I try to
practice a decent job in doing what I can to keep my PC running smoothly.
And, since there seems to be a number to keep track of (6 for me), I could
forget one or two. Plus, if I can do it automatically, it saves me one more
issue I have to do.
