Does anyone know why Disk Cleanup will not clean the recycle bin?
CCleaner cleans it just fine.

So does Disk Cleanup if you have it checked.

Of course I have it checked, and no, it doesn't clean it. I knew I
would receive this response from someone. I just didn't know who it would
be.

Hi C.B.

By default the Recycle Bin option is not checked in Disk Cleanup. Yo
will need to check it first before Disk Cleanup will empty it for you
If you do have it checked and you cannot empty the Recycle Bin manually
then see if this tutorial can help you

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/13...ile-folder.htm

Hope this helps

That's typical here isn't it?

Two suggestions. Why not simply Empty it? If for some reason it won't
empty then delete the Recycle Bin, then immediately restore it.

Hello Brink,

Thanks for the link. I'll try it. I know the default setting for
Recycle Bin is unchecked but for quite some time it has always been checked
when Disk Cleanup is started. I just assumed Microsoft had changed the
default in one of their updates and didn't inform the users. Although my
reasoning was flawed, it was based upon past behavior of Microsoft.
Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

Hello again Brink,

Update on solution:

I deleted the Recycle Bin as you suggested. A new Recycle Bin appeared
and a reboot was not necessary. I then opened Disk Cleanup, and sure enough,
Recycle Bin was already checked, even though it was empty. I closed Disk
Cleanup and deleted a file to the Recycle Bin. The deleted file was in the
Recycle Bin. I then reopened Disk Cleanup again. The Recycle Bin was
checked. I ran Disk Cleanup and it did in fact delete the Recycle Bin.
However, out of curiosity I performed a reboot and opened Disk Cleanup.
Recycle Bin was already checked. I decided to delete it and reinstall it
again but this time I rebooted without checking anything. I then ran Disk
Cleanup after the reboot and Recycle Bin was again already checked.
I can live with it. No big deal as I always check the Recycle Bin
before I delete anything from it. Common sense, you know.
Thanks again.

C.B.

C.B. Glad to hear it is working for you now. I was mistaken. Recycl
Bin is unchecked in Disk Cleanup unless something is in it.
