The uninstall directories for Windows updates only have value for a certain
period of time. If you haven't uninstalled a security hotfix after 3 months,
it is unlikely that you will ever uninstall it. When your system disk is
getting low on free space, one thing to do is to delete the old uninstall
directories.
Under Win 2000 / XP / 2003, this was an easy task because the uninstall
directories were easy to find as they all had names of the form -
C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKBnnnnnn$
However, this task is virtually impossible under Win Vista / 2008 because
the old versions of the software are spread across directories subordinate to
"C:\Windows\winsxs" using long names that make it very difficult to easily
identify which are unneeded.
Does Microsoft have a tool that will allow us to easily identify and delete
such directories ?
Thank you.
