Disk defraggmentor

When I run the windows disk defraggmentor or an independant third party
version, my windows vista home premium computer keeps freezing. How can this
be fixed?

Hello Steve,

Run the CHKDSK utility to determine whether a hard disk error occurred. To
run CHKDSK, follow these steps:
A. Click Start , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command
Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Allow.
B. At a command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
C. When CHKDSK is finished, restart the computer.

is it permanent or temporary freezing.
Can it be caused by defragmenting huge files ?

Also, what are sizes of fres space /largest free bloks /
largest movable files ?

The best depends on how the best is defined.

What happens is that my computer just stops responding. After that I cannot
do anything like control/alt/delete or anything else of what I'm doing. I
have to manually shut down my computer.

You never answered the question about how full your hard drive is. If it is
very full, then move some data off it, uninstall unused programs, do
maintenance, etc. to free up space. Defragmenter needs at least 15% of free
space to work.

However, it sounds more to me like your hard drive is failing. I would
definitely back up your data in any case and then test the drive.

Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive
mftr.'s website. You will create a bootable CD with the file you download.
You will need third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero,
or the free CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image, not as data.

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails
any physical tests, replace it.

Go to drive properties>tools>scan for errors, check both boxes, restart
and see if that does anything (Unless you already tried that of course).

Well, you certainly have enough space. Now test the hard drive. Doesn't
matter if it's new.
