Is it possible to have disk defragmenter run on one particular drive
and not another. It seems when I go to the properties tab of one drive
and set it to off, it does that for the other drive... why??

Check out 'defrag' at the command line

I understand I can run defrag from the command line, but I am talking
about the automatic defrag that runs on a schedule and I only want it
to defrag certain drives...

Sorry, but that is set as auto at a chosen time and you cannot change it.
You either need the command line defrag of download a preparatory defrag
application . I agree the the Vista fixed one is not good, XP one was
flexible.

As far as I know the auto defrag defragments all drives. You can stop auto
defrag from running, but, as far as I know, you can't change which drives it
defragments - other than using the command prompt to defrag, then you have
control over what drive(s) is defragmented.
