disk degragmenter not working

I try an run windows degragmenter however it will not work every time i run
it. It willl look like it is working and it will say degragmenting hard
disks however it will go for like 24 hours and not finish. I am sure
something is wrong because when i open up the properties for my c hard drive
the free space is computes changes randomly if i just keep opening it up
without doing anythign else. Teh hard drive space ranges from 488 mb to 6
gb. This is really strange since i have a 144 gb hard drive and only like 30
gb taken up that i know of. So disk defragmenter and the properties window
are not working. disk degramenter just won't finish and the properties
window computes random amounts of used disk space and a completely wrong
amount.

defrag on vista runs inthe background on low priority.

thereis no visual display on what it is doing.

I prefer to use
Auslogic Disk Defrag.

quick fact, moving boxes as it works.

seems to run on all wndows.
