I have a Vista Home Pre. Pc that had a sata data drive go bad so i removed it
and ordered a new hard drive. While I am waiting for the disk I need to press
F1 to by pass the disk during boot up. After Vista starts I see all my other
disk thruough windows explorer but if I check them through computer
mangment/disk managment I get Unable to Connect to Virtual Disk Service.

I do not know if Vista is damaged or I need to start a service or even the
bois F1 is effecting it but I thought I better ask. Is there something I need
to do to get disk managment working? Also can I run some type of diagnostic
that will tell me what else is wrong?

Thanks Jon

Jon,

It sounds like your Virtual Disk Service has been disabled. To see if this
is the case, go to Start --> Run --> type in "services.msc" (sans quotation
marks) and hit Enter. You should be prompted for an elevation request,
unless you have UAC disabled. No, scroll down to the bottom of the list and
double click on the Virtual Disk Service. If it is disabled, then set it to
manual (rather than automatic, so you can only have this service running when
you need it to run).

A few online sites that deal with services, such as BlackViper, have this
listed as Manual as the 'safe' choice, but their own configuration has it
disabled - obviously not the best choice.

If your service is enabled, then there is a larger problem here that needs
to be dealt with. Also, if you are unable to get to your services at all,
then it might be indicative of a larger problem as well - such as running as
a limited user account with no ability to elevate.
