Anyone know where I could find any freeware that would troubleshoot why my
hard drive thrashs for five minutes after I boot up?

It "thrashes" while loading all of the services that are set to
"automatic" plus while all of the startup services that you can see by
running msconfig are loading/starting.

Look at both and choose what you want to start when Windows loads.

Download and run Autoruns. You'll be amazed all the crap getting
loaded at startup.

Disable the Windows Search service (Indexing) and also the Superfetch
service.

Superfetch is basically trying to predict what files you are likely to
access during the next session and loads them into RAM.

Problem is, in my experience the hard drive gets thrashed for 10 minutes
after every bootup and 99% of those files won't be accessed anyway. The
files you do access will be cached into a buffer anyway so it's a bit of a
pointless service.

I don't have the gear/lab I once had access to. But I am beginning to think
Vista preloads a crap load of components into memory even if it doesn't
immediately need the, Indications of 17% used on a 8GB machine, that is
fat. Bet they load that in memory in advance. Sort of like a Linux RAM
disk but Microsoft style.

Vista disk thrashing is by design.

Vista was made to take advantage of all your resources, for example if you
paid for Ram, vista uses all of it.

Vista crams up the ram, uses the CPU 100% and fills up the hard drive and
makes it thrash.. because hey.. you paid for it so vista has to use it.

If vista detects your hard drive in a non thrashing mode.. it immediately
starts some task to make it thrash.. may it be search indexing, defender
scanning, or defragmenting...or one of the tens of crap vista has as
scheduled tasks.

Yes, vista makes sure your computer is working all the time.. and hogs all
resources up so YOU cant do any work
