I got this new Thinkpad X61 laptop with Vista 32 Home Basic mainly for
travelling.
This system comes with Diskeeper. But I disable all the scheduled defrag. I
want the system to defrag ONLY want I have the system at home, with lots of
free time, say, over night non-interrupted.

In this case, should I just use the Vista build in defrag program.
Diskeeper does not seems to do much extra for me, right?

Would you please parse that last sentence? Many thanks.

It's been a few years for me, but it USED to be that DISKEEPER would
defrag all files AND leave all of the contiguous free space at the end of
the drive, whereas MS defrag , does defrag the FILES, but did not "put all
of the free space at the end".

Vista's builtin defragment program is a step back from XP. Though it can be
scheduled to run, if you run a manual defrag there is no longer any visual
progress window.

I use Diskeeper on both my machines, the latest version, 2008, runs with a
very low priority and I never notice that it's running and my discs stay
defragmented.

From my pov, the Vista defragment program works just fine; it is automatic
and I don't either need or want the bother of watching it work or worry
about when it might need to be done.

Diskeeper does not do any more than the standard defragment program in the
Windows, correct?

What version of Diskeeper does it come with? Is it the latest?

Diskeeper 2008 is very good. It is better than vista's defragger
because it comes with the choice of manual/scheduled/auto defrag and
also you can apply a specific defrag mode for a specific partition or
drive. For eg. C: can be set to defrag automatically, and D manually.
You also get VSS compatibility and some other bells and whistles with DK
2008.
