I was getting this error message almost daily so I decided to use the
"update driver" option in the control panel device manager-big mistake! I
don't know what driver it downloaded or where it came from but it wasn't the
right one-aero stopped working and there were no usable resolutions for an
LCD monitor. When I tried to roll back the driver, it wouldn't roll and I
was getting an error in device manager stating that the driver could not be
loaded. I'm using a GEFORCE 7950 GT video card so I went to the NVIDIA
website and there is a new driver that came out this month and a version for
Vista 64 bit. I installed it and let the computer restart - but still no
Aero or required resolutions, couldn't open control panel, the whole screen
went black, so I shut down the computer and cold booted. That made the
difference. I have noticed this before with Vista where a restart doesn't
work and a cold boot is necessary. I knew there are some network type files
that are only read from a cold boot but didn't realize video drivers are
also loaded pre-windows.
At the moment as I write this Vista is flying but Vista is cranky and I
still don't have a warm fuzzy feeling that when I turn it on tomorrow
everything will work. I know there are a lot of folks getting this error
message and hopefully this info might help someone.
