Display name not being saved

Every time I switch my computer on, Messenger asks me for my display name in
a little box before signing me in. I have not changed the name and always
retype the same one.

In another post subject "Losing ID's" Jonathan Kay gave a link to Make
Messenger Remember, so I downloaded that to try. When run, that decided I
needed .NET Framwork so I spent a couple of hours installing that and then
all the updates!

MMR still did not fix it. I had also uninstalled Yahoo Toolbar which I found
hiding! CCleaner to get rid of that, and Registry Check. I started with WM
4.7 and upgraded to 5.1 without any better success. (XP Pro SP3)

Any other ideas?

Greetings Tony,

Make Messenger Remember is for Windows Live Messenger. What you're describing is a recent
problem with Windows Messenger and one of the recent XP updates which is still being
investigated.

Thanks Jonathan

That is a relief - not my computer's fault then!!!

Presumably the fix will arrive automatically in an update so suddenly the
problem will vanish?

I doubt it. Windows Messenger included with Windows XP is version 4.6 (?)
(and should not be confused with the "Messenger Service", which is an
intra-LAN communication device; also advisable to disable). I doubt if MS
will ever update it. They did not include it with Windows Vista, or Windows
7. It is so riddled with security holes it is most advisable to just disable
it in Windows XP. At least, I always have. Through the "Add/Remove Windows
Components" option in the sidebar of "Add or Remove Programs" in the
"Control Panel".
