When vista starts normaly my screen is totaly blank, yet I can hear the usual
start up sounds and the key board is responsive, so the pc has not crashed.
This problem first occured as I exited a game (Battlefeild 2142), I
disconected from the server and exited normally, at wich point the screen
whent blank and remained so ever since.

So far I have tryed:
Starting in safe mode - Sreen works normaly.

System restore to the night before - No change.

Antivirus run in safe mode - no threats detected.

Selective start up, not loading startup items - problem persists.

uninstalling recently added programs includin BF2142 - problem persists.

Updated graphics drivers - no change.

Windows update - discovered SP1 not installed (took me by surprise as I've
only had the comp for a week), installed SP1 but the problem still persists.

My PC: (System information does not appear to function in safe mode, so this
is from memory)
Mother board - ASUS P5N-E SLI
CPU - Intel Dual core 3Ghz
RAM - 3GB
Graphics- nVidia 8800GT

My monitor is an old one (I had to put this machine together on a tight
budjet), but as stated works fine in safe mode and never had any issues with
XP.

I've run out of ideas at this point, the last version of windows I really
understood was win98, any suggestions? Or will I have to re-install windows?

When you boot in safe mode try setting your display resolution to something
other than what it defaults to. Reboot

It could also be using a refresh rate your monitor doesn't support.
Make sure you have it set to 60hz

Good Luck

Unless somebody else comes up with a better solution uninstall SP1 then do
an upgrade install of Vista.

Starting safe mode reverts to 800 x 600 resolution automaticly. I have not
been able to find where to change the refresh rate.
