My screen saver will not turn on, a problem that happened once before and I
had to find some obscure fix in the Knowledge Base. Had to do with my using
a Microsoft wireless mouse. Does anyone know where this is? I guess I need
to download it again? According to my power scheme it's set for 10 minutes,
and the preview button shows it working fine.

Also, Many times when I turn on my laptop, I find that the display
resolution has changed so everything looks fat. I just searched in these
forums and found suggestions to update my graphics driver, so I looked at
NVIDIA, but Gateway apparently insists that I use their site. Oh yes, and
Windows did not find a newer driver.

Here's my info right now:

Gateway notebook MT3423, Vista pre-installed

Display adapter type NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
Total available graphics memory 335 MB
Display adapter driver version 7.15.10.9755
Primary monitor resolution 1280x720
DirectX version DirectX 9.0 or better

and here's what I found:

D20291-001-001.exe - NVIDIA Geforce 8 Series Video Driver
3/28/2008
Supports: Windows Vista (32-bit)
Note: Vista 32 ver 169.25

D20286-001-001.exe - NVIDIA Video driver 7.15.11.6925 version: 169.25
2/15/2008
58,481 KB
Supports: Windows Vista (32-bit)
Note: This file contains the Windows Vista NVIDIA Video driver for the
computer models listed in the Applicable Part Numbers section below.

D20237-001-002.exe - Nvidia 8800GTX Video Driver. Includes INF fix for
Proview Monitor version: 162.35
2/5/2008
56,715 KB
Supports: Windows Vista (32-bit)
Note: This file contains the Windows Vista Nvidia 8800GTX Video driver for
the computer models listed in the Applicable Part Numbers section below.

But I don't see an Applicable Part Numbers section anywhere. What should I
do?

Susan

1) Thanks for pointing out the screen saver fix, but it didn't work (I did
restart after installing).

2) Also, could someone address my question about installing another driver
in order to fix the changing display resolution (see below)? Thanks.

3) Now, after a bunch of automatic updates, my Word and Powerpoint files
keep trying to open in the 2007 versions. I changed the default programs
back to the 2003 versions, found my older Office folder, and restarted, but
they still try to use the 2007 version. I didn't buy these when I bought
this computer, and I completely abhor Word 2007 anyway.

How to change back? The files were originally in 2003, btw.

4) I think after each automatic update, my computer can't connect to the
wireless network until I find the IP addresses again. Can I do something
about this? I feel like skipping all the updates because they seem to reset
everything.

thank you very much,
Susan

Regarding the screen saver issue, I've tried the following:

"Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop
responding: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833"

---but sfc/scannow couldn’t finish for some reason.

"This issue may occur if the PCM and DVDLauncher services are running in the
background. The PCM service is used to start media programs faster. The
DVDLauncher is a program that is used for DVD playback.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895/"

--- but these are not listed in the services.

"After you install a Microsoft wireless pointing device, you may notice the
following symptoms when the computer is inactive:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913405/"

---but the updates listed are for 2007 SP1 and Firelight.

Any other thoughts?
thanks,
Susan
