display settings change

Hi,
I'm brand new to Windows Vista. I have the Basic version of it on my
Dell Inspiron 530.
I use a X2GEN monitor and have had some trouble determining which are
the best display settings.
Once I settle on something I find that later on, either coming back
from sleep mode, or after I've rebooted the PC, the display settings
have spontaneously changed.

I am wondering whether this is a common problem with Vista Basic and
whether there is a fix or work-around for this annoyance.
