DNS not working on my vista laptop.

Hey, I am having a problem connecting to the internet with my laptop. I
I do the diag feature it will tell me that it can't connect to the DN
server. I am running Vista and am able to ping 72.14.207.99 (Google's I
Adress) and am able to connect to 72.14.207.99 in my browser, but
can't load www.google.com. DNS is going to my router and has bee
working for months, it just stopped last night when it booted. I hav
tried http://www.opendns.com/ with no luck. Help appreciated

EDIT: I should have mentioned that there are three other computers (On
of the on the wireless like my laptop, and two of them are on LA
Cables.) and they all work fine. It's just the laptop that has develope
the problem

So what's the output for ipconfig /all say?

ss.

look in the router for the DNS from your ISP, manually configure the IP in
the network tcp/ip section.
does it connect now?

Firstly, I don't think that the output of my IP Configuration is goin
to help. It says the exact same thing as it did when the interne
worked, and all of the addresses are normal. I will include it at th
bottom however.

Copying the DNS servers from my router (running the latest DD-WRT) d
not work. I had already tried that, but I tried again and to no avail.

I have made a discovery though. I was able to ping Google by the IP a
I said in my first post. But this led me to try and put www.google.co
in my hosts file, and of course, it worked. I hope this info helps.
fix these things all the time for people, and have never seen anythin
like this. It's almost as if the computer is refusing to connect to th
DNS servers. The only AV I am running is AVG Free (latest) and do no
have any other firewalls, AV software or scanners. Computer is quit
clean (as I keep it).

When you do ipconfig /all, do you see more than one default gateway?
There was a point when on my machine (sorry, it was a while ago, I
can't remember if I was running Vista x86 or x64 at the time, or
whether I'd fully disabled IPv6 as I have now), a default gateway of
0.0.0.0 was showing. In terms of DNS resolution, I was experiencing
the same problems you describe.

It took some searching, but I found the problem described on the net,
together with a netsh command which removed the spurious default
gateway. It came back a couple of times, so I put it in a batch file,
but unfortunately I haven't kept it as the problem has recurred for
quite some time.

If you do have the 0.0.0.0 default gateway, then googling "vista
default gateway 0.0.0.0" (without quotes) brings up a bunch of pages
on the problem.

The netsh command I used to fix it looked a lot like the one in this
article:

although the symptoms he describes where not those you or I had (with
DNS resolution).

As you can see, there is no problem with the default gateway. There i
nothing noticeably wrong with the configuration at all. And I still can
get DNS to work.

Sorry - didn't notice you'd already posted the ipconfig output.

Can you connect to the DNS server in anyway? E.g. what happens when
you ping the IP address of the DNS server? If there's no response,
that might of course just mean that it's configured not to respond to
ICMP, you might get a more informative message though (perhaps
indicating that there's no valid route to the server). If that doesn't
reveal anything interesting, then try a traceroute - it might be that
your traffic is getting part way to the DNS server, but all the way
(or not back).

If you have a TCP ping tool that might reveal more information. Try
the various nmap scans against the target ip address.

A fairly definitive check to see if you have some sort of routing /
firewall issue (as opposed to Vista somehow opting not to try the DNS
lookup) would be to connect to the DNS server using nslookup. Get a
command box and try:

nslookup

This should attempt to connect to your default DNS server. If it
fails, you should be given an error message and an interactive
nslookup prompt.

You can try to connect to each DNS server in turn (perhaps including a
known good server - e.g. 158.152.1.58) by typing:

server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

(where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the address of the DNS server).

(sorry if this is all obvious to you - it's hard to know how familar
people are with various tools over the net).

If that doesn't work (i.e. if it fails to connect), then I think you
have a routing / firewall problem.

I also prefer to make things as simple as possible when
troubleshooting - so unless you're using IPv6, I'd disable it
completely - not just unchecking it in the config pages for the
interfaces, but disabling it in the registry:

Open the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\tcpip6\Parameters\

and create a DWORD value called DisabledComponents, setting the value
to 0xFF.

Then a reboot of course.

Hope these semi-random stabs in the dark help...
