DNS problem? I don't believe it but can it be my router?

My LAN is connected to Internet (ADSL) through a DLink DI-804
router which has been serving me well during many years now.

Recently I added a new Vista (Home Premium) machine to my
LAN; From before I have one XP, one 98SE and one 98 machine.

My Vista can connect to some of my preferred nodes, but for
instance www.microsoft.com is unreachable. One consequence
is that Windows Defender claims that it is out of date and I am
completely unable tu update its signatures.

There are no obvious anomalities in status reports from the router
or in responses to ipconfig commands.

I have tried all kinds of recovery, flushing the DNS cache,
restarting the router and so on, but in a post somewhere
i found a note that Vista has implemented a new IP-stack
which my router might not be serving correctly?

1: Is this a reality?

2: Is there any way I specifically can test my router for this
problem?

I shall be most grateful for any information.

regards Sven

Some older routers don't work well or at all with Vista.
For some users, turning off UPnP on the router or/and
turning it off in Vista's Services, *may* help.

Also, have a look at the links below.

An outdated network router may not function correctly when you use it together with new
networking features in Windows Vista

Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool
The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool checks your Internet router to see if it supports
certain technologies. You can use this tool on a PC running either the Windows Vista or Windows
XP operating system.

The hardware cost of owning Vista goes up and up and up.

The thing I haven't seen mentioned is that some malware will disable sites
like Microsoft.com and other sites (like online virus scanners).
They do this to make it harder to get the software needed to remove the
malware.
I don't know if this is your problem, but it is a possibility.
In some case's, the site is added to your 'restricted' zone in IE.
You might check that list and see if somehow your preferred urls somehow
were added to the restricted, instead of trusted, zone.

No, but first of all be aware that my router model number is DI-804
with absolutely no letters appended. I know that there has been quite
a few newer versions of the 804 during the years.

Then I believe that there are fundamental differences so that I must
have firmware applicable to Norway and cannot use whatever.

But I have sent a message to DLINK asking for information (DI-804
aren't even listed among their products any more)

Good idea, but that can hardly be the case.

First of all I have tried command prompt: ping www.microsoft.com
and had the response that the address could not be resolved when
I did this from Vista while from XP through the same router there
was no problem.

And both the restricted and the trusted zones are empty.

Besides, unless some malware was already on my machine when
delivered from DELL which I frankly doubt) I do not see how it can
have got itself into it.

But thanks for your comments.

Well, if you connect the Vista machine directly to the modem and everything
works and it doesn't work when the machine is behind the router, then the
router is the issue and doesn't work with Vista.

Yes, by unchecking IPV6 in the Control panel internet settings.
I did not try to modify the registry due to ignorance of KB929852

Fully competent to work in the registry I will try this as well

thanks and regards
