DNS Requirements

Hi

Is DNS required on every server - DC and Member server? If so when setting
the IP address for a server should the DNS be registered as itself or any
other server on teh network.

Finaly if promoting to DC, should DNS be installed first or is DCPromo
performed first.

Hello Microsoft,

No, you need at least one DNS server per domain, better use 2 as a minimum.
I always prefer DNS installed on DCs (AD integrated zones), because the DNS
zones are updated between the DCs with AD replication and all servers are
able to write, if you use a member server with secondary zone it is read-only.
So in case the primary is down no machine can register in DNS.

You should assign DNS server entries as part of IP confguration on every
computer. Assuming that you are using AD integrated DNS, refer to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825036 for "best practices" on the subject.
As far as your last question goes - DNS should be installed either during
DCPromo process (first domain controller in the forest) - or afterwards
(typically when promoting additional domain controllers in the same
forest)...
