Hi,

I have a computer that is using a DNS suffix search list that is entered
manually using the TCPIP properties under DNS. If I create a computer GPO
with a new DNS suffix Search list will it overwrite the manually configured
settings?

Thanks

Elvis

I *think* it will combine both, the manually configured one, and the GPO suffix. But as you, I haven't test it either. It's something that normally we don't change on workstations due to administration complexity.

in a migration, the DC r W2K3 sp2 but some of the workstation are Windows
2000. It looks like the GPO overwrites on Windows XP but the GPO does not
take effect on Windows 2000 workstations even though the GPO has been
successfully applied. Any ideas?

been testing in the lab, Windows 2000 workstation get the GPO for the DNS
suffix search list, I can see it in the reg but it ignores these settings. I
am thinking it is impossible to vonfigure Windows 2000 DNS search list via
GPO even if the DC is Windows 2003.

I would think it would overwrite only because once a policy is set a user
shouldn't be able to overwritten or appended too, but I 'm guessing Ace will
be able to recite locations where it will append in other situations. So
maybe I just got lucky.

Well, I am not going to try to guess, but I would assume that if there are
no conflicts, they would both apply. Also, I can't recall the difference
between a 2000 and XP client, no matter which version of a domain it is
(2000 & 2003). There's also DHCP option 015, if that was set, which winds up
being the connection specific suffix. This is why I *try* to simplify it by
just using the default methods, not bothering using GPOs to control this,
and just allow the suffix for the domain it is joined to.

Now my question bades, is there any need for additional suffixes? If not,
default functionality will work wonders. If tehre is, I would probably use a
GPO, don't use DHCP Option 015, and surely do not set it in the IP
properties, because it would be required to set it on each interface. The
GPO will apply to whichever interface is connecting to it (wired, wireless,
RRAS, etc).

Ace
