I just downloaded and installed the free VLC media player on th
recommendation of a listing on this forum as I had an MPeg 4 file tha
would not play using WMP or Nero showtime.

Unfortunately it has now taken over all my video files which no
display the VLC trafic cone logo, whereas before Nero seemed to be th
default player of choice. I would like to keep VLC to play a few file
but i do not want it as my default player.

Can anyone help me change this back to Nero or even WMP??

Incidently the VLC player did play the Mpeg 4 file, but for some reaso
without any audio. (i checked that the Volume wasn't turned off or dow
but no sound at all). The original clip was filmed on my Samsung mobil
phone at a gig recently and seemed to play fine on my old PC running XP
I was hoping someone would have some ideas for this as well.

Thanks in advance.

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Media Player
Click OK.

If their advice doesn't work, let me know.

VLC in some cases will corrupt the player's registry keys. It's easy enough
to fix once you know what to look for, but still can be confusing since it
does break things.

Thanks all for your helpful responses..

I will follow your instructions tonight when I get home.

Any ideas why the VLC would not play the audio of the Mpeg-4 file
recorded on my samsung phone. Or is there another player or a codec I
could download that will play the file?

Thanks again.

VLC is just a front-end to a known codec library (more or less FFDShow
Tryouts). Evidently that library does not support your file.

You don't mention what MPEG4 variant you're dealing with - if it's .3gp or
whatnot, you might need some custom filter/extension.

****You should ask Samsung how you are expected to play this file back.****

I cannot stress that idea enough. Providing assorted file types is an
expected part of a computing experience, but not providing people means to
play those files back is rather an uncomfortable user experience.
