Nothing is the same, I can't find anything in Vista. I have a nice picture as
my walpaper but the font under my icons is white and I can hardly see it, how
do I change it?

Type Start, Help and Support. Then in the search box type in "Change Windows
Fonts". Follow the instructions.

Hi Meenie,

Try toggling the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop"
option in the Visual Effects Performance Options window to see if it
looks better checked or unchecked. This will show you how.

Hi Judy. I'm glad to hear that it helped. Unfortunately, the only way
to change the color for the icon text is to use the "Windows Classic"
color scheme or theme.

Hi - I am trying to get the icon font color to black. I set the background to
a light solid color. it did change to black. Then I went back to change to my
light wallpaper and it switched back. I must have missed a step.

Please advise! Thanks.

NO "step" to miss, since this is the way it will always be.

A little knowledge about the matter:

A Microsoft OS since XP sets the color of the Icon text font according
to the Desktop background. If it is a light-colored background, the
icon text color will be dark. If the background is dark, on the other
hand, the icon text will be light.

There is no Microsoft "fix" for this. It is hard-coded into Windows.
There MAY be a third-party application somewhere which will do this,
but I know of none at present.

Thanks... However, am using a light wallpaper and the font is still white. I
guess Microsoft thinks it is not light, right?

I tried a 3rd party program recommended here earlier, but it did not change
the font color for me.

Thanks for trying to help.

Correct.

I'm sorry. Debbie. but there is just no way to help you, other than
telling you to use an even-darker desktop background, or use a much
lighter desktop background.

It used to be possible to do this. That pretty much changed with the
release of XP, and has been much the same since.

**** UPDATE!!! ****

I just found a utility which does EXACTLY what you want to do:
"12Ghosts", from here:
http://www.12ghosts.com/download/index.htm

Download the LATEST version, (9.0)

The "SetColor" utility in this package will do your desktop icon text
color changes.

Additionally, it does other things to make your Desktop experience
better.

NOTE that the full package is very complicated, so I would just
download the utility you need.

For Vista users with a background image i suggest choosing your
intended background colour similar to your image, then go to the most
contrasting colour as a desktop background. Now reselect your image as
the background. Now you should have a contrasting text/background
image. Obviously if you really wanted a black solid background and
black text this is also possible by creating a black background image
and using that rather than a 'solid background' colour.
