How to do custom updates?

I went to Windows Update to install some patches on a Windows XP Pro
machine. I noticed that Microsoft has updated Windows Update to version 5.
For testing purposes, I need everything up to, but not including, SP 2. In
reading the FAQ, it appears that I can indeed do a custom install to select
just the updates I wish. Yet, I can't find anywhere where I can specify
that I wish to do a custom install.

I checked out the "FAQ", but that just said you can do custom installs
without explaining how. "Settings" only allowed me to select my language
choice, and whether or not I wanted beta software. "Administrator options"
didn't have any options, just some readme-type text.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
