In my control panel, all options are greyed out, so I cannot turn on auto
updates (yes I really want to). In services.msc and gpedit.msc and control
panel / admin tools / comp management it is all enabled. In the registry it
is also enabled. But I cannot enable it. So what am I missing? (XP Pro SP2)

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Under the General tab, check "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services",
click "apply" and reboot.

"RoOkiE",

Has this issue been resolved? If not:

1) Is this machine connected to a domain?
2) What precisely is greyed out? The icon in the control
panel for Automatic Updates?

Please let us know, and thanks.

problem was in system properties/automatic updates I could not select
anything, while it was (greyed) out) selected as turn off.
