hello,
looking to use DFS-R to synchronize one folder between a handful of server
2008 machines... do I even need to create a namespace for this?

Yes, if you decide to use DFS-R I think you will need to create a namespace.
If you like you can outline your environment to forum and what you goals are
and you nay get some ideas on how to proceed with DFS deploymwnt in your
environment

looks like I don't need to. I just setup repl between 2 test machines
without creating a namespace... looks like the 'namespace' and 'replication'
features of DFS can be used seperately or together. Very nice, considering I
only need to replicate a single share between a few servers

You are not wrong. I had a setup for Home Folders where the folders with stored
on D:\HOME\Department\username. The shares were to D\Home\Department but the
replication was D:\Data (thus picking up all departments in a single replication
group.)
