What to do first: upgradation of components or application of service pack

I have done a fresh installation of Windows 2000 Pro. Various
components installed have older versions.
For example, DirectX 7.0, .NET framework 1.1, etc.

Should I first upgrade these components to their latest versions (i.e.
DirectX 9.0c, .NET framework 2.0, etc)
and then apply SP4 or the other way round? Which way is better?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A.

Do the SP first - it contains a lot of the things you may be updating

Thanks for your reply and advice. But it naturally prompts another
question:

There may be some fixes in SP that would be applicable to updated
components.

I will be thankful if you help me remove my confusion.

First install the SP
Then install Rollup1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861)
DO NOT install drivers from Windows Updates - get them from the hardware
manufacturers' websites.
Then go to Windows Updates and get the Criticals
Then go back to WU and get whichever of the Recommended you need/want

The SP includes the base upgrade of anything it has updates for
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=327194

....and anything else will get updated as required by WU

Installing the SP may revert some settings to the default - which is why you
should install it as early in the process of an install as possible!
