there are many things you can do...

its too much to reply, I would need to write several pages..

you can start reading here to get an idea

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com..._11-91600.html

I think one of the most important factors is to have the absolute minimum
things start with your computer (running in the tray or other background
processes)
unfortunately many programs add their own small startup thing ..

I think this is a crime that developers do! Such things should be optional
and easily turned off (see QuickTime for a bad example.. lol)

Well... one might need a bit more information to answer in a knowledgable
manner.

Video RAM shared with system RAM? If so, how much system RAM is allocated to
video RAM?

HD? 5400 or 7200 or different?

What exactly is lagging? My son is running Vista Ultimate on a system with
1GB system RAM with a discrete video card with 128MB's video RAM and he's
never complained, not once. (And you know how the younger set loves to
complain if the screen isn't redrawn like NOW....)
