I get the following error:-

this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com',
Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK 967 octets', Port: 110, Secure(SSL):
No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

It's got nothing to do with updates.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</paste>

Hi

Just tried switching off the email scan explicitly and it worked.

Why though did an MS update cause this to happen - haven't changed my norton
configuration since i installed it couple of years ago

The problem isn't the update but NAV's Email Protection in combination with
your use (prolly) of the default Main Identity. Given enough time, NAV
Email Protectioni will cause the problem for a great many OE users.
