On a USB-stick there appered over a dozen files and maps with names
which are just thrash, like xôdkû@8(*^&.cb^$ or similar.

Neither DOS of Windows Explorer will delete them, as they are illegal
file/map names.

What can I do to get rid of them?

Kind regards,

Rob, Amsterdam.

Hi,

Copy the files from the stick that you want to keep, then format it.

Thanks.
A very radical solution. I had hoped something less radical would be
available, a program of some sort, but well, I indeed formatted the
USB card now and copied the same files again. The 'trash files'
fortunately were absent this time. (A simple rename of these 'trash
files', which could make them deletable, is not permitted under
Windows.)

Good old DOS! I could have written a program myself to correct this
problem. Windows is a wee bit too complex, I'm afraid.

Kind regards, thanks,

Rob.

Considering the problem, Rob, the "radical" solution was probably the most
efficient method of getting it done as compared to finding a means of
addressing illegal file characters.

By the way, it's not DOS, never has been in the WinNT line. DOS died with
Win9x (the last iteration being WinME). NT uses a command line, or non-gui,
mode, but it's still Windows.

It is DOS I was writing about, believe me, I'm an oldie, even from
before CP/M.
My first computer was a (Grundy) NewBrain with no less than 32 kB RAM.
With an upgrade one had 96 kB and CP/M as well.
On startup, one had NewBrain Basic (interpreted) available. I wrote a
database program and even managed to sell it to other NewBrain users
(sorry, Richard, that was before the days of GNU-Linux).
Later I used Compas Pascal, very expensive, and three month later
Borland Pascal appeared at a quart of the price! But I loved Compas
Pascal, it was a very good compiler.

Kind regards,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

I was just trying to clarify, as many mistake the command prompt for DOS.
Hard to tell a user's experience level from brief posts.
