How do I get rid of MSN Messenger?

I deleted MSN Messenger in "Install and Remove Programs" in Home XP, because
I don't use it and don't want it.

Now, MSN won't let me sign in, and is demanding that I (re)install MSN
Messenger. Here's the nag screen
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...ermustbein.jpg

Please help me with this. I don't want MSN Messenger (or WLMessenger) or
any other messenger program installed.

I'm using Windows Home XP and MSN dialup -- it's either version 8 or 9.

Thanks

Greetings,

I don't have a working MSN subscription, so I'm unsure if this will work in 9, but it
certainly works on 8. You can trick MSN 8 into thinking Messenger is there by signing out of
the MSN Explorer, then downloading and running the following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...ckmsn_msgr.reg

After this, go ahead and sign into MSN Explorer again. The only thing that will be affected
(obviously) is the Online contacts button/popup menu.

Thanks Jonathan. Got this message when I tried to run your utility
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...sociation1.jpg
How do I do this? If this works, great! Should your program be launched
after the dialup connection is set up and before signing in?

I've noticed that, since uninstalling MSN Messenger, I'm still able to set
up the dialup connection, send and receive email through WLMail, and access
websites, and that everything is running and loading faster, without
dragging around MSN Messenger and MSN Explorer (which I don't use as my
browser). And I'm no longer seeing squirrely spyware-type messages like
"there are other users" when I close a browser, and "other users are still
logged in" when I shutdown the computer. And my firewall (Comodo) has
settled down, and is no constantly prompting me to accept unknown,
suspicious connections from other computers.

Since I use other browsers (Firefox, Flock, Opera) and use WLMail for email,
can you give me the procedure and format to bypass the MSN sign-in setup
altogether (along with MSN Explorer), and set up direct connections into the
MSN dialup numbers? Will I lose MSN Dialup Accelerator, and is this really
useful?

Thanks again.

Hi,

A .reg file is actually just a text file with commands for the built-in registry editor in
Windows to automatically execute. Since you're getting this message, I want you to be aware
that either something has specifically broken that association in Windows or there is further
damage to your Windows installation. We can work around it but I just thought you should
know that something is broken there outside of what's normal in a Windows installation.

To directly answer your question, the only time it checks for Messenger is when you "sign in"
to MSN Explorer.

You used to be able to create direct connections as you're asking, but I really have no idea
if it still works. The key (besides knowing your access number) is just to set up a new
connection in Windows and for the username add MSN/ to the beginning. So, if my username was
, the username would be:
MSN/jon
OR
MSN/

(I'm not sure which it was, Google didn't help, so try both)

And then for your password, just enter it normally.

If you don't have any luck with that, to workaround that .reg file issue, save the .reg file
to the desktop, then click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
%windir%\regedit.exe %userprofile%\desktop\trickmsn_msgr.reg
and click OK. It should ask you to enter the registry entries into the registry, just click
Yes.
