How do I go back to the Works version that came with my laptop?

I have Vista on my laptop and had the trial of MS Word/Office. Works was
also on my computer. This is a new laptop (8 month old Sony Vaio) and I
wanted to put my old disk of Office 2005 on this computer so that I
could have a working copy of Word. When I installed it, I clicked
Install With Custom Settings so that I could just install Word, but it
wouldn't let me- I couldn't uncheck Works. So, although I saved the new
files in a new folder, it seems now I can't use the version of Works
that came with my computer. I want to use the Works that came with my
laptop- can I revert back to it somehow? I only wanted to upload the
Word program. Have I made a total mess of things? Please help
:-/

if you uninstall the trial version, it should restore the previous version.
if you then install word, it should allow you to access word or works.
if it is not allowing you to use works, you may need to uninstall word

Thanks!! Now talk to me like I'm five ... can you further specify? I'm
really confused by this whole thing. I just want to be able to use the
(newer) version of Works that was installed with my laptop... I didn't
mean to override it when I installed the WorksSuite 2005 software- I
just couldn't unselect Works when trying to just install Word. And
furthermore, I'm not sure I can even use the version of Word I
installed! I didn't type in the product key because I didn't want to
perpetuate the problem somehow...

Simple: Uninstall the program (s) that caused the problems and see
what happens.

You say that the original version came pre-installed?
Did you get any Restoration Disks with the computer?
If so, you may be able to re-install included software (depending on the brand and model)
Check your owners manual for re-installing or restoring pre-installed software. It may be on a hidden partition (depending on the brand and model)
Or contact their tech support.

If these options are not available, then it looks like $$$.

Most software installed on an OEM machine can be restored.
Some are on the recovery partition, sometimes on a disk in the box with the
machine.
Every manufacturer does it differently.
Do you have a recovery CD or did you make a set?
Remember, a destructive recovery will erase your hard drive...and all
existing data/settings.
