am using virtual XP to get to windows express so i can get to this
newsgroup. i tryed to use WLM to get here but it only wanted to view my
mail which i use outlook to view and i don't want any other program messing
with how i have my email set up. and i could not figure out how to get to a
newsgroup account. charlie

In Windows Live Mail
One has to first setup a newsgroup server then download the groups.
- to setup > WLM Menu/Tools/Accounts/Add/Newsgroup account or \Tools\Accounts\Import\<browse to an previously saved *.iaf
file)

The Newsgroup mode can be accessed via
- WLM Menu/Go/Newsgroups or Control Shift L or click the News icon shortcut/icon in the bottom of the left pane(folder pane)

If you don't see the WLM Menu, press Alt M for the context menu that provides the option to 'Show or Hide the Menu bar

To access WLM in news only mode from a shortcut(desktop, quick launch, etc) use this command for the shortcut
"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /news

so i got to newsgroups following your directions i think. however, mlm
started downloading my mail from my account which i go to with outlook. so
i canceled that action and then when i got back on, i deleted my account to
msn.com. now i can't get updates from the newsgroups so i am back with
virtual XP and can get the new messages... i know it is possible to do this
but i don't have all my actions in a row yet... charlie

Windows Live Mail need not be configured as an email client. If the account
accessed is POP3, create a new folder under the Storag folders, and move all
email in the account you don't wish downloading. Then delete that account
from Windows Live Mail. If it is an IMAP, or HTTPMail account, you shouldn't
need to move the email out of the account folders before deleting the
account; but I'd do it anyway, just to be certain.

If all you will ever do is use Windows Live Mail for newsgroup access, there
is no need to set up an email account. Just the news account will suffice.
