I do have a genuine copy of XP Prof but since running the latest auto updates
it is now saying I have a pirate copy, does anyone know how I can fix this ???

start > control panel > add or remove programs.
put a check in the "show updates" box at the top,
scroll down to the bottom and find KB905474,
click on it and then click the remove button.

This may force you to manually update, I'm not sure
about that, but the banners should be gone.

Hi:

In that MS Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=905474
it says:

"You can uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications by using Add or
Remove Programs in Control Panel.
>>>

However, when I go into my Control Panel and highlight that WGA update, im
told :

"This update cannot be removed"

Wondering about this contradiction...

eli points out that there is no remove button, and
that is correct. If you had imaged the system drive
before installing KB905474 you could do a restore.
Otherwise you may be stuck with a reinstallation to
get rid of the banners. Maybe there's a registry hack.

WU support probably has its hands full, but you
might want to try their email:

It's a sham(e) M$ can't even get that right.......

M$ description states......
How to uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications.
You can uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications by using Add or
Remove Programs in Control Panel.

The above does NOT work.
You get the message "This update cannot be uninstalled"

System restore to earlier point does work.

NOTE
As this update fails some genuine copies of XP, I strongly suggest people
turn off automatic updates & then manualy install updates only once other
guinea pigs have tested the said updates and found that they don't cause
problems.

The recent KB90831 update caused major grief (and is still doing so) for
many users.
Clearly M$ did not properly test this update prior to release.

M$ should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
Better still, they should be sued for all customer losses incurred as a
direct result of releasing such utter crap.

Thanks for the info that system restore gets rid of it!

Those who prudently declined to accept the beta EULA
which accompanied KB905474 did not install it.

I agree there is a contradiction there, I just checked my add/remove.
The only thing I can suggest if possible those who didn't want the update use a
System Restore.
For others, don't accept the download if you're concerned. No need to turn off
Automatic Updates but select either "Notify Only" or "Download but do not
install" option."
Stop Microsoft/Windows Update from nagging about the update - check the "Don't
tell me about it again" box

With all the bull recently at M/S, M/S must have a new batch of programmers
stright out of school, or maybe this is nepotism at its finest.

An answer Donna's question at the beginning, how to install the
Windows Genuine Advantage display when it won't go in:

start > search > wgatray.exe > highlight the found file > file >
open containing folder > double click the update folder >
double click update.exe

workaround provided by Peter, tested by Randy - see
news:1E826439-3A03-4F09-8F86-...
in Randy's recent "Unable to install KB905474" thread.
